Dumpsters are measured in cubic yards. One cubic yard is equal to roughly 5-6, 13 gallon trash bags. Therefore the size of your project will determine how large the dumpster needs to be. If you’re remodeling a small bathroom or cleaning out your shed, a 10 yard dumpster will most likely do the trick. If you’re remodeling multiple areas of your home or cleaning out an entire garage, you may want to think about upsizing to a 20-25 yard dumpster.

While most household junk and construction material can be tossed in the dumpster, there are some restrictions to what’s allowed. Usually, this is because some items must be separated from other debris for environmental or safety reasons. Some materials are also not allowed to be dumped in landfills. Examples of items not allowed are; Electronics (TV, Radios, Computers, exc.) Rail Road Ties, Telephone Poles, Asbestos, Paint, Propane/Fuel Tanks, Car Batteries, and Recyclables. Tires are allowed, but are an extra charged along with items containing Freon. Material like steel/scrap metal need to be disposed of in a separate container, same goes for brush piles and other types of yard waste.
